To interlocutors, Lula said that he considers this to be an issue that Congress should be the protagonist of, since the Chamber approved the project last year and now the Senate can discuss it.
The bill that deals with the subject was approved in February 2022 by the Chamber, and since then it has been blocked in the Senate, mainly due to the speeches of the then president Jair Bolsonaro and offensives by the evangelical bench.
On February 28, Pacheco held a meeting with other House leaders and listed the priorities for voting this year. Something that caught the attention of the gaming industry was the inclusion of the project that legalizes the activity.
A few days ago, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), also defended that the Senate should vote on the bill to regulate gaming in Brazil this March.
“Gaming, an extraordinary source of jobs, an extraordinary source of revenue. It exists everywhere in the country, in all cities in Brazil and we do not regulate it. Online gaming sponsor the Brazilian national team, football teams… they are everywhere and not a penny is taxed in this country,” expressed the parliamentarian.
“The Chamber has already voted and we are waiting for the Senate's sensitivity so that it can make this vote now in March. If you change the text, it goes back to the Chamber, if not, it goes to sanction. We have to start treating our country as it is and have the courage to face the issues without any kind of prejudice,” said Lira.
In general, but not so much, the Ministry of Finance works on the regulation of sports betting. According to industry sources, betting should have been regulated by the previous government. It did not happen due to pressure from the evangelical bank.
One of the consequences is that the gaming sector estimates that there are over a thousand platforms operating from offshore.
