Lawyer Brasil Fernandes is invited to participate in regulation of sports betting debate

The Chamber's Finance and Taxation Committee invited Roberto Brasil Fernandes, a lawyer and specialist in gaming and lotteries, to participate in a public hearing on the regulation of sports betting in the country. The request was presented by federal deputy Merlong Solano and the meeting, approved last week, will serve to hear the Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, and sportsbook operators. It will take place on April 12, at 9 am.

Last week, the Chamber's Finance and Taxation Commission approved the request by Deputy Júnior Mano (PL-CE) for a public hearing with the presence of the Finance Minister and other authorities, as well as representatives of bookmakers, to discuss the regulation of the sector in Brazil.

Initially, Júnior Mano had suggested that they were invited, in addition to Haddad, Marcos Barbosa Pinto, undersecretary for Economic Reforms, and José Francisco Manssur, advisor to the Executive Secretariat, as well as executives from bookmakers Betano (Alexandre Fonseca, country manager Brazil), Galera.Bet (Marcos Sabiá, CEO), VaideBet (José André da Rocha Neto, president) F12.Bet (Marcos Seiróz, partner) and others, such as bet365, Pixbet, Sportinget, MajorSports and Pingol.

The meeting included the Secretary of the Federal Revenue, Robson Barreirinhas, and a representative of Sorte Online, the betting site that offers Caixa's official lotteries.

Now, federal deputy Merlong Solano (PT-PI) has submitted a request for Roberto Brasil Fernandes, a lawyer and specialist in gaming and lotteries, to be invited to discuss the regulation of sports betting and clarify doubts about taxation in the segment.

In the application, Merlong informs that Brasil Fernandes is a member of the Gaming Commission of the Brazilian Bar Association – OAB-Nacional and of the Brazilian Lawyers Institute – IAB. He points out that Brasil Fernandes is a specialist in the sector “with several articles and publications, relevant to the topic under discussion.”

Honored by the invitation, Brasil Fernandes told GMB that “it is a great responsibility to speak at an audience of this size with the Finance Minister and other major authorities for a select audience, which is the Chamber of Deputies.”

For him, in view of the modality being legalized, what could happen in Parliament is to change the legislation from the tax point of view. “There are few issues to be addressed at this time, but the main one will certainly be taxes.”
