Hearing in Chamber is scheduled but Haddad's trip to China may cancel the meeting

The public hearing to discuss sports betting at the Finance and Taxation Commission remains on the agenda of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. But due to the trip of the Minister of Finance Fernando Haddad to China this Tuesday (11), it is possible that the meeting will be postponed due to the absence of the main actor of the meeting.

The public hearing at the Finance and Taxation Commission was requested by Deputy Júnior Mano (PL-CE) and the objective was to hear the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, on the regulation of the sports betting sector.

Deputy Júnior Mano (PL-CE), who asked for the debate, recalled that Temer’s government enacted Law 13.756/18, which governs the permission and regulation for the operation of foreign betting sites in the country.

"These companies can even sponsor private institutions and advertise their services in various media. Several clubs in the Brazilian Championship Series A have sports betting sites branded on their jerseys," said the deputy.

Júnior Mano stated that the audience intends to discuss a proposal by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, who on March 1 said that Brazil should tax sports betting. According to Haddad, not charging taxes is “illegal” and allows currency evasion.

For the time being, the presence of Wesley Cardia, CEO of the National Association of Gaming and Lotteries; André Gelfi, president of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming; Márcio Malta, CEO of Sorte Online; and lawyer Roberto Brasil Fernandes, are confirmed.

Teresa Caeiro, who would represent bet365, has already declined the invitation, and the Federal Revenue Secretary, Robinson Barreirinhas, has not yet confirmed his presence.

In view of the absence of some of the protagonists in the public hearing, its cancellation is expected at any time.
