Clubs have not engaged in sports betting regulation proposed four years ago

Football clubs have positioned themselves in favor of regulating sports betting and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) itself wants a slice of the cake in the future taxation of the sector to be determined by the government. However, four years ago, during the Brazilian Gaming Congress, which had GMB as an official media, the theme was exhaustively debated and the teams did not take a position in defense of the activity, with the exception of Vasco da Gama.

Four years ago, during a panel on self-regulation in the sports betting sector at the Brazilian Gaming Congress, in which Games Magazine Brasil was the event's official media, the topic was widely discussed. On that occasion, it was clear the importance of the sector operating in a transparent manner and the importance of establishing rules for the activity, including advertising within legal and ethical aspects.

In addition to numerous market specialists, including operators, lawyers, regulators and the media, Bruno Maia, then VP of Vasco, was present on the panel, who exhaustively defended the activity as a strong generator of funds.

Bruno Maia stated that Vasco da Gama was one of the first football teams to sign a sponsorship contract with a gaming company. “The clubs live in a very delicate financial situation and sponsorship is essential for them to continue acting consistently. A club is not just a football team, but a much more complex organization, which involves a social activity for nearby communities and therefore needs to be strengthened,” he said.

The panel on self-regulation, publicity and advertising in the gaming sector, was moderated by Paulo Saad, VP of Grupo Bandeirantes, and had the participation of Lorenzo Caci, director of Sportradar, Alessandro Valente, CEO of SuperAfiliados, and Bruno Maia himself, CEO of Agência 14 and vice-president of Vasco da Gama. Full coverage of the panel can be found here.
