Increase in all age groups

Sports betting market also grows among women

The turning point for women's football came in 2019, with the success of the World Cup in France. From there, everything followed: audience growth with records on all continents, more competitions, broadcasts on different platforms and more money. Perfect setting for another market: sports betting. The main websites in the sector point to an increase in both the number of bets on women's games and the participation of women.

Data from the Casa de Apostas platform show that the number of bets on women's competitions grew by 139% in 2002 compared to 2021. At Esportes da Sorte, sponsor of several clubs, the growth was three times between one year and another.

"The industry has grown as a whole, the visibility around sports broadcasts and social networks is massive, and as it should be, the bets around these competitions have also gained prominence," says Hans Schleier, marketing director at Casa de Bets.

Paty Fernandes, 31, from Rio Grande do Sul, followed all this evolution very closely. Content producer and gambler since 2017, she was the only woman in the business at that time. The boom, according to the digital marketing specialist, happened in the last two years.

The growth accompanies the movement of bookmakers in this period. Of the 20 clubs in the men's Série A, for example, 19 are sponsored by one of these companies. Last year, all teams in the Brasileirão even printed these brands on their shirts. The naming rights for Série B have also been owned by the sector since last year.

“People started researching, got in touch with this world and are starting to understand more. Two years ago, we created the ‘Bethanias’, with one live per week. The program opened doors for other women, it gave voice to those who wanted to enter this market,” says Paty, who works on the Aposta 10 website.

Paty saw this jump in the website's numbers. Three years ago, access was between 90% and 95% male. Today, it is at 70%. On the Esportes da Sorte platform, the percentage reached in 2022 among female bettors was 43.8% — in 2021, the house presented an average of 36%.

The division of the predominant age groups shows great profile diversity; from the youngest, between 18 and 24 years old (34%), to women over 55 years old (5.2%). Between 45 and 54 years old, the average is 15%, and most are in the range between 25 and 34 years old, with 45.3%.

“All the publicity is reflected in this return, and it is worth an addendum, that the semifinals of the last Brazilian Championship took four clubs with huge fans, cases of Flamengo x Internacional and Corinthians x Palmeiras, and the presence of Corinthians and Palmeiras in the women's Libertadores. This consequently also contributed to these accesses,” adds Darwin Filho, CEO of Esportes da Sorte.

The passion for football is a common trait among those who take risks in the world of betting. Paty says that, among the women who give tips and bets, the majority are only focused on football. She says she doesn't know experts in other sports, such as basketball, tennis, etc. But, she recognizes, the way of seeing football and her heart team changes completely. Gremista, she admits that she already bet against the team because of the scenarios of the game. But in the end, she says, she's always happy.
