Commission already installed in the Chamber

Parliamentary Committee of sports betting will be composed of 34 deputies

The President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil, Arthur Lira (PP-PI), read this Wednesday (26) the request for the establishment of a Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate the manipulation of results in football and, in practice, put it into operation. The Commission will have 34 deputies who must be designated by the party leaders.

The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) was proposed by Deputy Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE), from the government base.

The proposal came after the first phase of the "Maximum Penalty" operation, triggered by the Public Ministry of the State of Goiás (MP-GO), which initially investigated the manipulation of three games in the last round of last year's Série B.

A gambler, Bruno Lopez de Moura, would have co-opted players from three teams — Vila Nova, Sampaio Corrêa and Tombense — to commit a penalty in the first half of their games.

The CPI was already filed with the Chamber when the second phase of the operation took place, which investigates matches from the Brazilian Championship Series A and State Championships such as Paulista and Gaúcho.

In the Justification of the CPI request, Carreras mentioned that a sports betting monitoring agency identified, between January and October 2022, more than 130 football matches suspected of manipulation, most in lower divisions.

The CPI, however, leaves out the risk of manipulation in games of other sports, such as basketball, volleyball and tennis, which are also listed on betting sites.

"Concern about the integrity of matches has been growing in recent years, especially due to the growth of online betting. Match-fixing has evolved and become much more sophisticated and targeted, even reaching other sports," wrote Carreras.

The deputy mentions that the CPI should focus on football because this sport "has a significant role in the formation of the Brazilian national identity."

For a CPI to be instituted, 171 signatures are required. Carreras got 205, initially with deputies mainly from the opposition, with emphasis on the Union and the Bill, and in recent days also with support from the governing PSOL and the Federation headed by the PT (Workers' Party).
