After protest, Brazilian government says open to hearing from clubs about betting sites

The eight main big clubs in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo released a manifesto protesting because they were not heard by the federal government for the regulation of betting sites. The Ministry of Finance reported that it is enough for the teams to look for the body and that they will have their positions analyzed in the body. The Provisional Measure (PM) text to regulate bets is ready, but it can still be modified.

Sports betting in Brazil is legal, however, without regulation. Therefore, the betting sites that serve Brazilian consumers are based abroad.

The Ministry of Finance, Fernando Haddad, is preparing a PM to regulate bookmakers. One of the rules will be that they all have to be headquartered in Brazil.

In a joint statement, Corinthians, Santos, São Paulo, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Botafogo, Vasco and Fluminense expressed their displeasure at not having been consulted:

"It surprises the Big Clubs of the RJ x SP axis that the proposed regulation takes place without the Clubs have been consulted or have been given the opportunity to suggest improvements and adaptations to Law nº 13.756/2018, and without due discussion."

"If they had made an appointment they would have already been heard. All they have to do is call here and they will be heard. All they had to do was call or send an email and the meeting was already scheduled. And now it's just a matter of marking. We heard everyone here," said the Special Advisor to the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, José Francisco Manssur, responsible for regulating betting.

His idea is that the text of the PM is still open and may change depending on the clubs' suggestions.
