Accusations of match-fixing in Brazilian football are leading senators to create a Sports Commission, which should be chaired by Romário.
The objective is to deal with the project by Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) and Hamilton Mourão (Republicanos-RS) that regulates sports betting with the collection of taxes, but without a ban on advertising (Bill 845/2023).
According to Kajuru, the future commission will also be able to monitor investigations into match-fixing in football matches. Senator Jorge Seif (PL-SC) criticized the government's delay in sending the provisional measure that regulates sports betting. For him, this gap facilitates the criminal schemes denounced by the Public Ministry of Goiás.
Kajuru stated that “at no point are we wanting to discuss advertising. Some parliamentarians want, as in England, an end to advertising. I think this is disrespectful to the media, which has nothing to do with the bigger, more serious problem, which is the manipulation of results.”
To create the Sports Commission, the Plenary must approve a change in the Internal Rules, as it is currently linked to the Education Commission.
