The conversation between Flamengo athletes and Senator Carlos Portinho lasted about 20 minutes. The main theme was the Provisional Measure (PM) that regulates the sports betting sector in Brazil.
The issue of match-fixing in football has seriously affected the Brazilian Championship and is moving leaders, bookmakers and the Ministry of Justice, which has summoned the Federal Police to investigate the allegations.
As a result, several clubs have promoted debates on the subject to raise the awareness of athletes, managers and coaches, guiding them on how to behave in the face of possible attacks by criminals trying to offer financial advantages to members of the squad.
At Flamengo, it could not be different, considering the repercussion that the club has on the national football scene and how much it represents in bets on the various sportsbooks operating in Brazil.
As the risks of these actions are great, especially at this moment when the Provisional Measure is about to be signed by President Lula, the Flamengo board summoned the club's former legal vice-president, Carlos Portinho, for a chat with the athletes.
At the meeting, Portinho clarified the players about the practice of match-fixing and provided information on the provisional measure that will regulate the sports betting sector.
In addition to being a Senator, Portinho has worked in sports law for over 20 years and was the rapporteur for the law that created the SAF (Sociedade Anônima do Futebol), which transforms clubs into limited companies.
