Betting: STJD requests suspension for 30 days for eight players involved

The Attorney General of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) of Brazil has submitted a request for the preventive suspension for 30 days of eight players involved in Operation Maximum Penalty, by the Public Ministry of Goiás (MP-GO), which investigates the manipulation of results of the Brazilian Championship of 2022 and state tournaments of 2023.

The request came after the second phase of Operation Maximum Penalty. Of the eight names of the STJD prosecution, six were denounced by the MP-GO, while the other two (Kevin Lomónaco and Moraes) confessed and became witnesses in the case.

Players who had a request for suspension by the STJD:

  • Eduardo Bauermann, Santos defender
  • Moraes, left-back from Aparecidense and ex-Juventude
  • Gabriel Tota, Ypiranga midfielder and ex-Juventude
  • Paulo Miranda, Náutico defender and ex-Juventude
  • Igor Cariús, left-back for Sport and former player of Cuiabá
  • Matheus Phillipe, goalkeeper of Ipatinga, ex-Sergipe
  • Fernando Neto, midfielder for São Bernardo, former Operário
  • Kevin Lomónaco, defender of RB Bragantino

The eight were denounced by the STJD attorney under articles 243 and 243 A of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice. They address, respectively: “Acting deliberately in a way that is harmful to the team you are defending”; and “acting, contrary to sporting ethics, with the aim of influencing the result of the match, competition or equivalent.”

Operation Maximum Penalty

According to MP-GO, bettors enticed athletes so that they would be punished with yellow or red cards throughout games for Series A and B of the 2022 Brazilian Championship and some 2023 State tournaments.

In addition, the following five other players have already been preventively removed from their clubs for having names mentioned in conversations:

  • Pedrinho and Bryan Garcia (Athletico, dismissed)
  • Richard (Cruzeiro)
  • Vitor Mendes (Fluminense)
  • Nino Paraíba (America, dismissed)
