Keeping an eye on Operation Maximum Penalty

Corinthians holds orientation lecture on sports betting for its squad

On the afternoon of this Monday (15), Corinthians held a lecture with its professional squad to guide athletes on sports betting. The presentation was led by delegate Dr. César Saad, from the Delegation for the Repression of Sports Crimes (DRUDE), and lawyer Luiz Felipe Santoro.

The presentation addressed the legal consequences that an athlete may suffer in the civil, criminal and sporting spheres if he becomes involved in cases related to match-fixing.

The lecture comes in the wake of events exposed in recent weeks by the Operation Maximum Penalty, by the Public Ministry of Goiás, which revealed a match-fixing scheme involving players from the A and B series of the Brasileirão.

The ‘Timão’ was not the only club to carry out such an activity with its professional squad. Teams like Flamengo and Vasco have also promoted lectures addressing the topic with their players in recent days. It is worth noting that Corinthians has no player involved in the so-called ‘Betting Mafia’ so far, either as denounced, investigated or cited.

Last Thursday (11), after being questioned about the case, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo replied that he is “finding it great” the developments of the case and that Brazilian football needs to be “moralized”.

“Whoever has to screw himself, screw himself. There's no way to preserve someone who does something wrong. The problem is in the relationship, in which it reaches the athlete and will reach other sectors of football. There has to be punishment,” said Luxa.

In total, more than 10 players have been sidelined by their clubs in recent days, including Santos defender Eduardo Bauermann. Considering the first and second phase of the Goiás Operation Maximum Penalty Operation, 15 players have already been denounced to Justice.
