Faced with unusual situations, with remote betting odds given the low probability of success, malicious bettors found a way to manipulate results in games, convincing some athletes, during their performance, to force an expulsion, to commit a penalty, to have low income, among other simulations, in exchange for money.
As a result of some facts – such as what was recently repeated by Santos player Eduardo Bauermann, who allegedly received around R$50,000 (US$ 10,200) to receive a yellow card during a match – Brazilian football is in the sights of justice, which investigates cases in order to curb match-fixing and punish criminals.
The value of legal sports betting is estimated to be US$40 billion. However, the amount wagered illegally is estimated to be between US$340 billion and US$1.7 trillion worldwide. The information is provided by the United Nations Crime Prevention and Public Safety Unit, during the 2nd Brazilian Sports Integrity Summit, held in Brasilia.
Virginia Zepedeo, CFO of Betmotion, a company that operates in the betting market for 15 years, says that the risk department of the house has tools capable of detecting possible suspicious actions.
“We work in detail and are increasing the monitoring and analysis of all bets placed on the site. When a bettor behaves abnormally, as soon as we identify it, we start to analyze that player and the market on which he bets, by conducting a real-time survey of possible fraud in the event in question,” she explains.
According to Betmotion’s financial director, the idea is to always be alert to possible atypical and non-standard movements in secondary betting markets, such as corners, cards, etc., as well as in secondary sports leagues or when there is a very high volume of bets on the team that is not favorite.
“In this case, the provider can limit the amount of bets and the amount bet, thus reducing the risk of collusion between bettors,” she details.
Zepedeo also reiterates that the platform offers all reliability features, such as data encryption and security certificates, but she has no way of knowing the nature of the bettors' actions outside the site's secure environment.
“When necessary, different anti-fraud actions are activated,” concludes Virgínia.
