Rio de Janeiro City Hall announces the first public eSports Arena in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro City Hall announced the creation of the first public eSports Arena in Brazil, a space dedicated to players and fans, which promises to be a milestone on the national scene. With this initiative, the city stands out as a pioneer in supporting electronic sports and further strengthens its role as a reference in the segment.

The project was presented this Tuesday (16), and will be the first public arena for games and eSports in Brazil. The Arena Gamer, with capacity for 100 people, will be installed in the culture center ‘Nave do Conhecimento do Engenhão’, in the ‘Engenho de Dentro’ neighborhood at the north zone of the “Marvelous City”.

According to the City Hall, the Arena Gamer will have a broadcast studio, from where the eSports competitions will be televised and narrated, dressing rooms for the teams, an area for the technical team, which will support the events, an LED screen for broadcast of the matches, bleachers and a raised floor, which will make competitors stand out.

With the broadcast equipment, it will be possible to receive various presentations (debates and individual presentations) via streaming.

The objective is to host small competitions and regional eSports tournaments, in addition to becoming a center of inclusion, learning and social broadcasts for visitors.

The initiative is from the Municipal Secretariat of Science and Technology, in partnership with the Games and eSports Coordination of the Municipal Civil House. At the event, a video of the project was presented, which has the capacity to receive two teams of up to five players. The intention is that it becomes a place where the Rio de Janeiro gamer community can use for local tournaments and become a training center for new eSports teams in Rio de Janeiro.

"Our bet is to encourage cariocas who are starting to enter this area to be able to compete with anyone. That's what ‘Nave do Conhecimento’ (Knowledge Ship) is, it reduces inequalities. The game is a great opportunity to enter the world of technology. It is also enormous educational and income generation potential. An industry today much stronger than streaming networks. We want the city of Rio to be a forerunner in supporting eSports and, therefore, we are proud to place here the first public arena of games," said Mayor Eduardo Paes.

The launch of Arena Gamer is part of the Mayor's plans to make Rio de Janeiro the eSports capital of the world, as Paes recently announced on his social networks. “Rio, capital of eSports! Rio recognizes eSports as an important sport modality that brings with it the most important principles of sporting practice such as discipline, focus, social inclusion and competition.”

The project will also provide interaction for those who have no contact with the gamer universe. The creation of an area for simulators is planned, with virtual reality glasses that allow immersion in a digital environment through 360º images. There will also be the Retro Games space, which will allow visitors to come into contact with classic games from the beginning of video game creation.

The ‘Nave do Conhecimento’ already offers technology courses and a LAN table for users to use broadband internet. In addition to Arena Gamer, the creation of other spaces is planned: startup incubator, coworking and NaveLAB.
