Federal Police expands scope of match-fixing investigations, now also reaches volleyball

Brazil’s Federal Police (FP) launched a process to investigate an alleged match manipulation scheme involving volleyball athletes and sports betting. The information was confirmed by the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, who clarified that the work of the FP is in the initial phase.

This Thursday (18), Dino gave a press conference to talk about actions by the federal government in several areas, including the Federal Police process that investigates an alleged manipulation scheme for football matches in this year's state championships and in Series A and B of the Brasileirão 2022.

Flávio Dino made the Federal Police available to assist in the progress of the work of the CPI on Sports Betting, which was established last Wednesday (17) by the Chamber of Deputies.

“Regarding betting, we have several aspects of investigation today that even go beyond football. There are cases of other sports that are under investigation so that, with that, the FP can apprehend this whole mosaic that unfortunately was constituted. And we, the Ministry of Justice and the Federal Police are available to collaborate for the proper functioning of the CPI,” said Dino.

“We believe that Parliament has a fundamental aspect, especially in the prospective dimension, that is, a new normative framework that prevents the criminal action of these fraudsters,” he said.

Early stage volleyball investigation

Minister Flávio Dino detailed that the Federal Police inquiry into an alleged fraud scheme involving volleyball athletes and gamblers is still in its initial phase.

The Ministry received information about irregularities in the sport after cases involving soccer players came to light. There is still no information on volleyball athletes who may be involved in the illegal act.
