According to the report, between 2020 and 2021, the increase was 127% in the country, which represents, in absolute numbers, the opening of 51 companies in the sector in one year to 116 in the following. Between 2021 and 2022, the sector achieved 106% annual growth, from 116 companies opened in the country to 239.
According to the Datahub study, in the first three months of this year, the number of open companies already exceeds the entire year of 2020, with 69.
To carry out the survey, Datahub considered the opening and closing of the CNAEs (National Classification of Economic Activities) of companies that use the segment of gambling and online betting operations as their primary and secondary activity, even if such segments are not legalized or regulated.
One of the explanations for the increase in companies is the regulation of online betting in the country, in December 2018, by Law 13,756. Since then, online betting companies have obtained licenses to operate in the Brazilian market, the report indicates.
According to the study, the increase could also be linked to internet access and the growth in the use of smartphones, which have made it easier and more convenient for people to bet from anywhere and at any time.
Another influence to justify the progress of this sector was the growing interest of Brazilians in sports and sporting events, such as football, which is a national passion. Increased media coverage of sporting events and the popularization of betting among young people may also have contributed to the sector's growth, according to the report.
“The perspective is that the online betting market will continue to grow in Brazil in the coming years, driven by factors such as the popularity of the sport in the country and the increased penetration of the internet and smartphones,” explains André Leão, Chief Product Officer (CPO ) from Datahub.
Methodology
Datahub collects, classifies, approves and documents non-sensitive data from public sources. Data were collected from Datahub's intelligence and market research platform, which has more than 600 data sources, more than 56,000 CNPJs, more than 400 variables, including exclusive models.
In addition, all data has a proven origin, is updated regularly and is in compliance with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD). The focus of this study is to explore, present and analyze in general the growth trend of the online betting segment in Brazil in recent years.
The study considered the CNAE 9200-3/99 (as primary and secondary), which indicates exploitation of games of chance and bets not previously specified, which encompasses the segment of operations of games of chance and online betting.
Although gambling is prohibited in Brazil and sports betting is not regulated in the country, there are CNAE codes to define the framework of these economic activities.
