Brazilian Association of Fantasy Sports debates electronic sports in Chamber's public hearing

In a public hearing at the Sports Commission of the Chamber of Deputies to discuss electronic sports held last week, the president of the Brazilian Association of Fantasy Sports (ABFS), Rafael Marcondes, gave a presentation on the classification of electronic sports as a sport by governments and the inclusion of the practice in public policies. “Electronic sport is inclusive, we have men and women, people with special needs, young people and seniors.”

Marcondes recalled that according to the principles of the Olympic Charter, electronic sports fit perfectly in the description of sport, with friendship, fair play, equality, among other values. “We already have several entities, such as the International Olympic Committee, that recognize eSports as a sport.” The Labor Court and the Ministry of Justice have already recognized this in Brazil.

“Electronic sport connects socially and stimulates personal skills,” explains Marcondes and informs that, currently, in the country, there are 15 million Brazilians in just one form of electronic sport, Fantasy Sport. Electronic sport is a natural evolution of sport and society. Proposals pending in the Chamber already deal with the regulation of electronic games.

Deputy Márcio Marinho (Republicanos-BA), author of the request for a public hearing, stated that, just as previous generations were fully interested in sports competitions such as football, current ones also like competitions, however, their preferences focus on called eSports.

"With a growing audience of people who can easily access games, it is not difficult to understand why it is increasingly popular to follow and participate in eSports games. The definition of eSports as a sport or not is important to define the investment of public resources and to bring more legal security," says the deputy.

Special advisor to the Ministry of Sport Carlos Villanova recalled that the federal government is dedicated to the debate and creation of an environment for electronic sports in the universe of public policies and that, by overcoming the superficiality of the discussion "whether it is sport or not", now is the time to focus on promoting unequivocal benefits for society.

"We formed an inter-ministerial working group to work out how we are going to act on the subject of electronic sports, exchanging opinions and information exactly as we are doing in this public hearing. that account for the dimension of electronic games in Brazilian society," explained Villanova.

The Director of Games at the Department of Sport and Leisure of the Federal District, David Leonardo, recalled that the modern concept of Physical Education treats sport as a combination of body and mind and that electronic sports encourage the practice of physical activity if well conducted.

Deputy Ícaro de Valmir (PL/SE), president of the Special Subcommittee on Electronic Sport, added that this modality is not only present on cell phones, computers or video games, “electronic sports are also present in education, within the market and determine several investments in other sectors.”

Also participating in the public hearing were the president of the Brazilian Confederation of Games and eSports (CBGE), Paulo Roberto Ribas; the co-CEO of VOLZ and former vice-president of Marketing at Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, Daniel Orlean; and professor Dr. from the University of Campinas, Leandro Mazzei.
