Brazil is experiencing a sports betting apps fever. Since these applications were legalized, albeit without regulation, they have gained popularity and increased their revenue quickly, to the point that today they sponsor most elite clubs in Brazilian soccer, have their brands on stadiums and star in prime-time commercials on the main open and closed TV channels.

Their success is so great that it has been transforming the way Brazilians follow soccer matches – bettors are more concerned with guessing who will get a yellow card or the number of corners than celebrating their team’s goals.
At the same time, as a side effect, gangs specialized in bribing players to manipulate matches emerged - a criminal practice that is being investigated by the police
But how big is this market today in Brazil? Panorama Mobile Time/Opinion Box decided to measure the popularity of betting apps among Brazilians who own a smartphone. Up until now, one in four Brazilians with a smartphone, or 25%, has bet money on a sports betting app.
The average bettor is male, young and low-income. Among men, 33% have bet money on these apps. This percentage drops to 18% among women. In the analysis by age group, the percentage is 36% in the 16 to 29 age group. The percentage drops to 24% in the 30-49 age group and to 14% in the 50+ age group.
In classes A and B, 22% of smartphone users have bet money on these apps. The percentage is almost the same in class C: 21%. But it rises to 30% among Brazilians from classes D and E. In other words, those who have the most to lose are the ones who have used these apps the most.
It is interesting to note that most bettors, or 60% to be exact, recognize that they lost more money than they won on these apps. 23% say they won more than they lost. And 17% say that, in the end, they were tied, that is, neither won nor lost money.
While 66% of female gamblers acknowledge losses, this percentage is 57% among men. In the comparison by social class, 52% of players from classes A and B say they lost more than they won, compared to 57% from class C and 65% from classes D and E.
The most popular betting apps and sites currently in Brazil are Bet365, Betano, Blaze, Pixbet and Sportingbet, in that order.
