Sports betting CPI turns summons into invitations and calls bookmakers

The sports betting CPI heard this Tuesday (13) afternoon the president of the Goiás Football Federation, Ronei Ferreira de Freitas, as well as presidents and former presidents of referees and athletes unions. Before, the collegiate transformed the summons into invitations and representatives of sites that operate in Brazil will be heard. Betano, bet365, Betfair, Pixbet, Parimatch and Betnacional were the first to be called.

The Secretary of the Federal Revenue, Robson Barreirinhas, the President of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, and the Minister of Sports, Ana Moser, were also invited to contribute with information to the CPI.

The parliamentarians criticized the STF's decision to grant habeas corpus so that Eduardo Bauermann, defender of Santos, was released from testifying. For deputies, this type of decision prevents the CPI from better understanding the whole process that involves the manipulation of results in football.

Among the call requirements, approved in the form of an invitation, the CPI will hear:

  • Denise Coates (partner of bet365).

  • Alexandre Fonseca (director of Betano) and the partners of Betano's service providers, namely: Leonardo Lacerda Montenegro Chaves, Filippos Georgios Antonopoulos and Rafael Lavezzo dos Santos.

  • Kimberley Daly and Gustavo Silva (executives of Betfair) and André Luís Friaca Rodrigues (partner of the company that provides services to Betfair).

  • Ernildo Júnior Farias, partner at Pixbet.

  • Maksym Tsaryk (partner of Parimatch) and the partners of Parimatch's service providers, namely: Edson Antônio Lenzi Filho Thiago Heitor Presser (partners of the payment method company Paybrokers).

  • João Studart, CEO of NSX Group Betnacional.

After such decisions, the president of the CPI, Julio Arcoverde (PP-PI), opened the public hearing to hear sports, refereeing and athlete officials on the topic “Manipulation of results in the State of Goiás.” Everyone was unanimous in stating that football needs to be protected against match-fixing and that everyone takes guidance actions to combat the practice.

The president of the Goiás Football Federation, Ronei Ferreira de Freitas, made it clear that the work developed by the entity involves all categories and the FGF conducts guidance campaigns.

“These discussions are very important for Brazilian football and especially for Goiás. I suggest that we regulate sports betting, which would help federations, entities and football clubs,” defended Ronei de Freitas.

The athletes' representative, Júlio César Garcias, stated that he has always sought to work seriously and in line with the way in which the Goiás Football Federation operates.
