President of the CPI defends ending corners and bookings in sports betting

Brazilian federal deputy Júlio Arcoverde (PP-PI), president of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) that investigates match-fixing in football, defended this Tuesday (20th) the implementation of a new model for the sector. The politician is in favor of bets starting to exclude “accessories” from the game, that is, they no longer work with corners, cards, penalties, etc., which could reduce the chance of match-fixing.

“I think the model adopted in France can be adopted in Brazil, with the creation of a regulatory agency. There, it is forbidden to bet on football accessories, such as corners, penalties, yellow cards, laterals, etc. You bet on the result of the first half, the second half and the final result. I think that you already get a lot out of manipulation,” said Arcoverde to news outlet ge.

For the deputy, the functions of the CPI should go beyond punishments, with projects for regulations and inspections of betting in Brazil.

“The CPI has to be based on punishment, but also propositional. That parallel to the CPI, we can prepare a bill to make a regulation together with the Ministry of Finance. I can mention France, which has a betting regulatory agency. There are several proposals, we are studying what is happening in the world, because it is not just a problem in Brazil,” he concluded.

“Sportradar on the radar”

At the meeting that took place on this Tuesday (20th) afternoon, which listened to the testimony of player Romario, the rapporteur Felipe Carreras (PSB-PE) confirmed that Sportradar will be heard. “Sportradar is on the radar”, he said, associating the company's name with the fact that they intend to call it, stating that some details are missing for it to appear.

Felipe Carreras mentioned that it was she who said that Brazil is the country where there is the greatest evidence of the practice in the world. He also made it clear that bookmakers would be called "in due time".

The rapporteur's statements occurred after the acting president of the CPI, deputy André Figueiredo. (Bloco/PDT – CE), having said that he was visiting the French Football Federation and that “they now have a national gaming agency. And one of the things banned in France was betting other than on results, whether partial, for the first half, or finals, for the game as a whole. All these yellow card, penalty, lateral and corner bets, the French Federation officially does not recognize and does not bet on them.”

Carreras then stated that "Sportradar provides services to the French Football Federation and numerous other federations, with tools for detecting match-fixing."

“It will be brought. It was Sportradar that said that Brazil is the country where there is the greatest evidence of match fixing in the world. It is extremely worrying,” he continued.

Finally, Carreras recalled that Brazil needs modern legislation for the game. “Of the G20, only Brazil and Indonesia do not have legal gambling. We need to legalize, collect and have clear laws. We have to create a regulatory agency that has its technological integrity tool.”

The CPI-FUTE has a new meeting this Wednesday (21st), when it will vote on 24 requests for summons and invitations involved in match-fixing, club presidents and directors of arbitration entities, among others.
