Netrin launches database that helps identify suspects in sports fraud in Brazil

The Brazilian startup Netrin, specialized in compliance mechanisms, fraud prevention and risks, launched a new product to identify suspicious bettors, as a way to support the ecosystem to further improve the analysis of fraudulent bets. This is the only solution of its kind currently on the Brazilian market.

This product was created taking into account the discussions on the regulation of sports betting in Brazil, as a response to the cases of match-fixing that were discovered in recent months, mainly after the Maximum Penalty operation, carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás.

It is a database containing more than 30 thousand athletes, managers and referees, active and inactive, and more than 100 thousand people related to them, including 1st and 2nd degree relatives or with corporate relationship. In its first version, the database focuses on active and inactive football players from the main national and regional championships, but it is already planned to include the other local championships in all series, in addition to also including other sports, such as volleyball, basketball and futsal.

The product is available for use through queries via API (Application Programming Interface), in which each bettor integration operation, the bookmaker can check if this is a professional involved with the sport or a person related to a professional, in addition to being able to obtain information about the club, championship and year of enrollment.

Since its launch, already in the first week of application in some customers, Netrin has identified more than five thousand bets made by people related to sports professionals and around 400 by active or inactive professionals. This information, together with statistics and bet volume, can increase the efficiency in detecting fraud or even serve as a barrier to entry for this type of bettor.

One aspect detected in the occurrences of attempted or effective manipulation of results is that the movement consists of the involvement of people related to the athletes, in which a certain action in the match can benefit the bettor with expressive gains. For example, with a penalty or the application of a yellow card.

“It is clear that there are needs that cannot wait for government rules, especially for the very health of the ecosystem, in order to avoid that even more damage is generated for clubs, fans and society and, primarily, for the potential degradation of the so effervescent passion that Brazilians love this sport,” comments Netrin's CEO, Caciporé Valente.

The Maximum Penalty operation, carried out by the Public Ministry of Goiás, is in the second phase of investigation and has already found cases involving championship matches in the states of Goiás, São Paulo and Rio Grande do Sul. According to GE information, nine gamblers and fifteen players were denounced. In early June, eight players were tried and convicted.

The ANJL (National Association of Games and Lotteries), which brings together several of the main players in this segment, has launched guidelines for its affiliates with 10 measures aimed at reinforcing the good practices already adopted by the sector to avoid further manipulation actions. The guidelines intend to extinguish or considerably reduce the number of frauds in betting, and Netrin's database fits as a complement to these measures.
