The proposal that is being processed in the Federal Senate that aims at a total ban on advertising for sports betting would mean, if approved, to decree the end of the sector's activities in Brazil, warns the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL).
Filed this month, Bill 2,985/2023 proposes to amend article 33 of Law 13,756, approved in 2018, which already established that communication, advertising and marketing actions in the sector should be guided by the best practices of social responsibility.
For the president of the ANJL, Wesley Cardia, any ban by the National Congress would invade the competence of the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (Conar), with which even the sports betting houses signed an agreement this month for the creation and implementation of rules and self-regulatory activities to be applied to sporting bets advertising.
“Companies can only reach bettors through advertising. It is not up to the State to regulate advertising. This is already being done by Conar, an entity that has been regulating the advertising market with recognized competence for years, with the full support of bookmakers, so that we can advance in our purpose of disseminating honest and responsible gambling, which includes ethical advertising,” Cardia said.
The ANJL also points out that the measure would harm not only the sector but also an extensive production chain in the advertising and sports markets. According to the Agências & Anunciantes ranking, released in May, last year 12 of the 300 biggest advertisers in Brazil were sports betting houses, against just one company in 2018. 51 are sponsored by bookmakers.
Launched in March 2023, the National Association of Games and Lotteries defends the interests of its associates, the sector and responsible and honest gambling, always guided by encouraging sports, betting security and contributing to the country's economic development.
Members include GaleraBet/PlayTech, Kaizen, Betano, Hebara, F12, PagBet, BetNacional, Mr. Jack, Primtemps, BetFast, Aposta Ganha, Leadership Capitalization, and Parimatch.
