OAB Rio de Janeiro Gaming Commission holds debate on sports betting

With the aim of broadening the debate on the regulation of sports betting in Brazil, the Special Commission on Sports, Lottery and Entertainment Law of the OAB in Rio de Janeiro will hold a meeting next July 31st. Some of the industry's leading experts will discuss current issues such as an optimal model of regulation and protecting integrity in sport.

In a face-to-face format, but broadcast on the OAB-RJ channel, the entity's Special Commission on Sports, Lottery and Entertainment Law will bring together some of the leading specialists in the sports betting industry to discuss the current situation in the sector and the importance of the regulation of sports betting in Brazil.

Accreditation, with a welcome coffee, is scheduled for 8:30 am and then the Board of the Commission will formally open the meeting. President Paulo Horn will be joined in the opening panel by lawyers Filipe Alves Rodrigues, Leandro Pamplona and Tiago Lezan.

Paulo Horn, president of the Commission, states that he had been sought out by market players to discuss the regulation of sports betting from a legal perspective and the directions that Brazil is following in the tiresome wait for the solution to the obstacle in the effective implementation of Law 13.756/2018 , which legalized the activity.

“This interest is very important and Brazil has already lost more than four and a half years in endless discussions and waiting for the regulation of sports betting. As a result, billions of reales stopped entering the public coffers in the form of taxes and grant fees to be applied to operators,” he commented.

Meanwhile, according to him, some states are already moving ahead and seeking their local regulations, which demonstrates that the activity is attracting attention not only nationally, but also in federal entities.

“In light of this, we decided to hold a meeting to discuss the issue from a legal point of view, without neglecting market aspects,” commented Paulo Horn to GMB, adding that “as a civil entity in tune with society's desires, we want to contribute to serious discussions about the importance of regulation in Brazil.”
