Proposal goes now to Mayor’s sanction

Councilors approve inclusion of eSports in Goiânia’s official events calendar

The Goiano Electronic Sports Championship can be included in the Official Events Calendar of Goiânia, the capital of Goiás state in central Brazil. Bill 414/2021 by councilwoman Sabrina Garcez was approved in the second and final vote by the plenary of the City Council of Goiânia this Wednesday (12).

The proposal goes to the sanction of Mayor Rogério Cruz and establishes the holding of the championship annually in the first half of March. The councilor who proposed the article, an enthusiast of the sport, explains that the purpose of the project is to give visibility to electronic sports, strengthen the eSports scene in Goiânia and facilitate access for people who still do not have the necessary structures to join this activity.

According to the Brazilian Confederation of eSports, electronic sports are competitions played in electronic games in which players act as professional athletes in traditional sports and are watched by an audience in person and/or online, through various online streaming platforms or TV.

According to Sabrina Garcez, this is a growing sport all over the world, which is no different in Goiás and Goiânia.

In 2021, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the creation of the Olympic Virtual Series. The competition was the IOC's first test with electronic games, showing the growth of this sport, which can raise US$ 1.65 billion a year according to estimates for that year.

Brazil is the 13th largest electronic games market in the world, with more than 66.3 million active gamers.

In Goiás, the Goiás Electronic Sports Championship, the “Goianão de eSports”, has been growing more and more, attracting both athletes and the public.

In Goiânia, Sabrina Garcez allocated a tax amendment of R$ 200,000 (US$ 41,000) for the stages of the eSports championship in 2021/2022 and R$ 300,000 (US$ 61,000) for the Copa Goiânia de eSports.
