A winning bet for Rio Grande do Sul

With technological advances and the popularity of sports betting, the iGaming industry has proven to be a promising source of revenue for several countries. In 2018, Brazil authorized the operation of this new economy. 'Rio Grande do Sul cannot be left behind in this movement,' states Marcus Vinícius de Almeida, state deputy (Progressistas) in an opinion column for GZH.

Since then, the betting market has not stopped growing. However, the necessary regulation will only take place this year. Projections by the Ministry of Finance point to the generation of 600,000 jobs and up to R$ 15 billion (US$ 3.11b) annually in taxes.

In addition, the STF has already recognized the competence of the States to establish their own lotteries. Minas Gerais plans to collect R$ 5 billion (US$ 1.03b) with the conclusion of the recent public concession process for this service.

Rio Grande do Sul cannot be left behind in this movement. Anticipating, with our science parks, incubators and technology centers, attracting new investments could allow us to build a virtuous ecosystem with iGaming.

For the consolidation of what could be an economic beacon for the State, it is necessary, however, to provide legal security to welcome these enterprises. State legislation must be in tune with federal norms, and the business environment needs to be less bureaucratic and have more economic freedom.

In the Legislative Assembly, I am a proponent of the Subcommittee for the Regulation of Electronic Sports Betting, with the aim of drawing up a bill aimed at making the gaucho territory an attractive place to receive the best companies in the segment, today with operations installed in the United Kingdom, in Malta, Cyprus and Curaçao, for example.

With joint efforts, disruptive vision and focus on innovation, we can overcome crises and overcome budgetary challenges. This formula was adopted by developed nations that discovered how to conquer their prosperity.

It is politics beyond palaces and offices. Happy will be the gauchos if they manage to access, before the other states, this winning ticket.
