Jhonatas Mendes, President of OAB-MA Gaming Law Commission

"Sports betting regulation will generate resources for public policies"

The former director of Lotema, Jhonatas Mendes, believes that the regulation of sports betting will ensure the growth of activity throughout Brazil and especially in the state of Maranhão. He has just participated in the creation of the OAB-MA Gaming Law Commission, assuming the presidency of the group.

Attentive to the way in which Provisional Measure (PM) 1.182/2023 regulates sports betting in Brazil, Jhonatas Mendes has just taken over the newly created Gaming Law Commission of the OAB in the state of Maranhão.

Former director of the Maranhão Lottery, Mendes intends to closely monitor the entire regulatory process in order to bring the best practices to the State. For him, it will be very important that the PM really protects the rights of consumers and, as president of the OAB-MA Gaming Commission, “he will defend this posture.”

For him, the sports betting sector is one of the most promising economic segments at the moment, especially in Maranhão, where he sees great possibilities for directing more public resources with the regulated exploitation of games to be applied in social areas, sports and leisure of the Maranhão population.

“We want to be close to regulation, considering the importance of the OAB in society. We will monitor all topics involving consumer relations, taxation and development of the sports betting industry,” he highlights.

For the former director of the Maranhão State Lottery – Lotema, specifically regarding the lottery vertical, the model adopted in the state can serve as a reference for other lotteries in operation or in the implementation phase throughout Brazil.

As there are still some technical aspects to be finalized, the now president of the OAB-MA Gaming Law Commission, believes that from September Lotema will start operating.

“There is a need for some adjustments, since Lotema's implementation model happened some time ago and for the entry into operation, Lotema will adjust to the norms foreseen in the Provisional Measure that has just been edited by the federal government.”
