Governor of São Paulo wants state lottery to fund charity hospital institution Santas Casas

The government of São Paulo has been working for some time to establish its state lottery. And this Monday (28th), Governor Tarcísio de Freitas announced, at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, that he intends to implement the activity as a way to finance the Santas Casas in the state. He promises that next year it will be effective.

The Health Secretary of São Paulo, Eleuses Paiva, announced this Monday (28th), the creation of the SUS Paulista Table. The goal is to complement the amount paid by the federal government for each procedure performed in the public health system.

During the ceremony, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas said that “it is the first major structural step that we are taking in Health” and that “it is not possible to wait for the national readjustment São Paulo has always led, has always been an example and will be once again.”

Then, Tarcísio stated that next year the State Lottery should be implemented to help finance the Santas Casas in the State of São Paulo.

It is worth remembering that at the end of June, Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, together with a delegation from the state government, visited Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Lisbon to learn about the institution's financing model through lotteries in Portugal.

In operation for 525 years, Santa Casa de Lisboa stands out in Europe for its defense of social causes and creative funding models. One of them is precisely the operation of Portuguese lotteries for funding and investment in health. In 2020, revenue from lottery products and services rendered accounted for more than 85% of the institution's income.

In São Paulo, the concession of future local lottery services is in the process of restructuring projects under the State Investment Partnerships Program (PPI-SP). Among the possible modeling of the project is the application of part of the lottery revenues for direct investment in essential public services, as it happens in Santa Casa de Lisboa.
