Lottery retailers mobilize against bill that opens up gambling in Brazil

Lottery store owners across Brazil are trying to mobilize deputies in their states to block the approval of Bill 2,626/2023, which regulates sports betting in the country and opens up permission to also operate online casinos. The president of the Associação Nacional dos Lotéricos, Bruno Lobato, says that there will be unfair competition with the retailers chain and wants to discuss the issue further.

The Associação Nacional dos Lotéricos (ALSPI) wants more debates on the possible approval of Bill 3626.2023, which regulates sports betting in Brazil and could also open online casino operations on sites accredited by the federal government.

Bruno Lobato, president of the entity, recorded a video explaining the main problems of the text. “They will be able to create as if it were a modern casino, anywhere in the country, without any type of limit. Just pay the grant and do it,” he comments.

Lobato adds that there will be unfair competition with lottery retailers, putting their survival at risk. The video appeals to parliamentarians for a deeper discussion on the topic, especially through public hearings.

The bill that regulates sports betting was presented by the Lula government in July and the rapporteur Adolfo Viana presented this Tuesday (12) in the form of a substitute a text that also authorizes the operation of online casinos.

Furthermore, in Lobato's assessment, deputy Adolfo Viana did not foresee the social impacts that could be caused, such as ludopathy. If kept on the agenda, federal deputies will have limited time to carry out a detailed analysis of Deputy Viana's replacement, which is extensive and full of technical terms.
