The sentence was handed down following legal action by the company Polla Chilena de Beneficência, the only company authorized in the country to place bets, against the internet provider Mundo Pacific, accused of promoting these platforms.
The court order does not yet have a deadline to be complied with, but it sets a precedent in Chile, as it establishes that, with the exception of Polla Chilena, other betting houses operate "on the margins" of the law.
The Chilean Supreme Court ordered that the provider Mundo Pacific "cannot broadcast or promote gambling unless it believes it has legal authorization and administrative authority, and must therefore immediately block all requested websites."
Among them are the British Betway, the Greek Betano and the Swedish Betsson, with which Chile's National Professional Football Association (ANFP) had signed a sponsorship contract at the beginning of the year, after which the first and second division tournaments adopted the company name.
Therefore, the association will no longer receive US$2.5 million per year.
At the beginning of September, the Chilean government ordered the ANFP to terminate these million-dollar contracts within 30 days, considering them "outside the law". The sports association announced that it will appeal the decision.
