The minister recognizes that the electronic sports industry has been growing and generating relevant figures, facts that motivated the creation of an area dedicated to eSports.
“I have a slightly different view on this subject. Yes, we consider eSports as a sport. We see the capacity and breadth it has. You can see the number of tournaments there are nationwide. It is impossible to turn a blind eye to this issue and we will, yes, treat it like sports, as I think it should be,” he stated.
Ana Moser's speech had a bad reaction among the eSports community, which has a different view from that presented by the former minister and consider that the sport is, indeed, a sport.
The then minister also rebutted criticism coming from social media on the subject and explained that the matter should be a topic of "intersectoral" matters, not falling under the responsibility of just one of the ministries.
Last year, Rio de Janeiro hosted IEM Major Rio, the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) world championship. The competition was sold out and had a peak of one million simultaneous spectators.
