Lottery bets in Brazil have broken consecutive records in the last 5 years

Bets on Caixa lotteries have broken consecutive records in the last five years. Last year, Brazilians bet R$23.2 billion (US$ 4.75bn), an increase of 25% compared to 2021. In another area, the taxation of sports betting is in the sights of Planalto and Congress, and was approved in the Chamber this week.

Caixa raised R$13.8 billion (US$ 2.85bn) from lotteries in 2018; R$16.7 billion (US$ 3.45bn) in 2019; R$17.1 billion (US$ 3.51bn) in 2020; R$18.5 billion (US$ 3.8bn) in 2021; and R$23.2 billion (US$ 4.75bn) in 2022. The numbers were obtained through the Access to Information Law by news outlet Metrópoles.

Not even the pandemic, with more acute economic impacts in 2020 and 2021, interrupted the continuous series of increases in bets placed in lotteries operated by the public bank. The games can also be played online, but Caixa did not detail this proportion in the collection, citing commercial secrecy.

According to the government's plans, the country will soon begin to receive funds from sports betting. Last Wednesday (13), the Chamber easily approved a project that regulates sports betting and other online gaming. An 18% tax will be charged on the sites' revenue. The text will now be voted on by the Senate.

Even with the approval of the bill that regulates sports betting, which would give, in the assessment of some market players, the prerogative of state lotteries to operate the modality, accrediting private companies, the government is keeping an eye on this movement and the special secretary from the Ministry of Finance José Francisco Manssur has already said that bookmakers should not venture into this venture.

According to him, the STF's decision guarantees rights to operate state lotteries, but it will be up to the Union to authorize companies that qualify with the Ministry of Finance to operate throughout Brazil.

“Bookmakers accredited in a state will not be able to sell bets in any location other than the jurisdiction where it was approved. If this happens, we will go to court,” said the secretary.
