Senate Sports Committee wants to hear Minister André Fufuca in public hearing

The Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, barely took office and was already invited to a public hearing by the Senate's Sports Commission (CEsp). The deliberative meeting will take place this Wednesday (20) and aims to debate the manipulation of results in football. The collegiate also invited other authorities, in addition to the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues, but has not received any confirmation so far.

The new Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, is one of those invited to give testimony at the Senate Sports Committee, which discusses the fight against match-fixing. As soon as he took office, the incumbent has not yet confirmed his presence at the hearing.

In addition to the minister, the members of the Commission invited the following to give testimony:

  • Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF)
  • Ronaldo Botelho Piacente, attorney general of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) for Football
  • Rafael Bozzano, deputy attorney general of the STJD for Football
  • Fernando Martins Cesconetto, prosecutor of Goiás
  • José Francisco Manssur, special advisor to the Ministry of Finance
  • Andre Gelfi, president of the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming
  • Rodrigo Alves, president of the Brazilian Sports Betting Association (Abraesp)
  • Andrei Kampff, lawyer specializing in sports law
  • Guilherme Buso, director of the Brazilian Association for the Defense of Sports Integrity (Abradie),
  • Bruno Arleu de Araújo, football referee
  • Wilson Luiz Seneme, president of the CBF Arbitration Commission

The public hearing was held at the request of Senator Romário (PL-RJ). Specifically mentioning football, he justified the proposition by warning of the frequent allegations of result manipulation in a scenario of expansion of the sports betting market.

“The need to guarantee transparency, legality and the fight against illicit practices leaves no doubt about the importance of promoting a broad and in-depth debate on these issues, involving representatives of sports institutions, government authorities, companies in the sector, experts and other interested parties,” assessed the senator.

In other requests, Romário himself and senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO) added names to the guest list. The event is scheduled for after the CEsp deliberative session, which begins at 9:30 am, in room 13 of the Senador Alexandre Costa Wing.
