Copinha 2024

The Paulista Football Federation activates Stats Perform and Police to thwart match-fixing attempt

The last round of Copinha 2024 saw a failed attempt at match-fixing when a bettor offered US$ 2,000 to a tournament goalkeeper. The player reported the incident to the FPF (Paulista Football Federation), which then engaged the Civil Police and Stats Perform. Since 2022, Stats Perform has been responsible for monitoring betting houses worldwide.

The incident involved a message sent to a goalkeeper in the Nacional 0x1 Avaí match, held at Comendador Souza Stadium in São Paulo. The player's identity and team were not disclosed.

The bettor aimed to convince the player to allow two goals before halftime, with the US$ 2,000 payment coming from sports betting winnings.

The goalkeeper refused to participate, notifying the FPF, which promptly involved the Civil Police and Stats Perform, the monitoring partner for betting houses globally since 2022.

The perpetrator of the attempted crime was identified and apprehended by the DRADE (Police Station for the Repression of Crimes of Sporting Intolerance) officers. He confessed to the authorities and was indicted, facing charges while remaining at liberty.

It's worth noting that before the tournament, FPF took action against match-fixing in Copinha Sicredi. The Federation conducted a special operation, providing awareness lectures for all athletes and technical staff members from the 128 participating clubs. The lectures covered conduct guidelines and anonymous reporting channels.

Since 2022, FPF has enlisted the services of Stats Perform, an internationally experienced company monitoring suspicious movements in betting markets.

The four-year agreement between FPF and Stats Perform, a pioneer in Brazil, follows the trend developed in Europe and the United States by major leagues such as NFL, NBA, and the Premier League. The Federation, along with LiveMode, implemented similar measures in FPF competitions, such as restricted stadium access only to Stats Perform's scouts.

Stats Perform, a leading sports tech company in data and artificial intelligence technology, holds exclusive rights for distributing data from FPF competitions to betting houses worldwide. The agreement was facilitated by LiveMode, FPF's partner for all broadcast and commercial rights, and intermediated by Zeus Sports Marketing (ZSM).

Read FPF's statement:

The Paulista Football Federation informs that it became aware of a supposed attempt at match-fixing before the Nacional-SP x Avaí-SC match, for the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Jr., held on Tuesday (9), and immediately notified the Civil Police and Stats Perform, a partner company responsible for monitoring betting houses worldwide.

The received complaint and FPF's subsequent preventive action prevented the alleged match-fixing from taking place.

FPF has been actively combating match-fixing in this Copinha through preventive lectures for all athletes, members of technical staff, and directors at the venues, providing guidance and directives.

FPF has been a pioneering sports entity in the fight against match-fixing since 2015, with practical actions such as the creation of the Integrity Committee, real-time match monitoring, and a cooperation agreement signed in 2020 with SIGA (Sport Integrity Global Alliance), the leading sports integrity organization.

Regulated betting

Sanctioned by President Luis Inácio Lula da Silva at the end of last year, the law regulating sports betting establishes guidelines on game integrity and prevention of match-fixing and other frauds.

The legislation authorizes the suspension of payments for bets under investigation for result manipulation.

It also requires companies to verify the identity of bettors using facial recognition technology. Operators must monitor customer activities to identify potential harm or abusive use.
