“Caf has anti-fraud tools ready to regulate iGaming in Brazil”

The GMB Exclusive series 2023 Balance /2024 Goals continues with the important participation of Jason Howard, CEO of Caf, one of the most renowned identity verification and authentication firms in the world. He reports substantial growth for the company not only in Brazil, but internationally, and highlights that iGaming regulation could lead to new fraud attempts but that CAF will be prepared to comply with regulation and offer appropriate tools to combat the practice.

GMB - What is your assessment of Caf's performance and general growth in 2023? Was it as expected or exceeded your expectations?
Jason Howard
- The year 2023 proved to be exceptional for Caf as we exceeded all of our commercial targets. Not only did we solidify our presence in the Brazilian market, but we also began to expand internationally. We have now established a solid foundation for our future growth and continue to prioritize customer satisfaction as we strive for excellence in our product roadmap.

What is your assessment of Caf's performance and growth in the Brazilian market in 2023?
We had consistent growth during a year when many companies struggled in the face of difficult economic conditions. We attracted new customers in new industry segments and saw growth in our existing customers who began to use Caf's products and services on a larger scale. We've also expanded into new use cases and are serving more enterprise customers now.

The imminent regulation of sports gambling in Brazil was also an advantage for us. We had great conversations with sports betting operators, both nationally and internationally, interested in operating in Brazil. In general, sports betting and iGaming have been significant areas of growth for us.

Could you list the main achievements or goals achieved?
By consolidating our position in the market, Caf emerged this year as a leader in digital identity in Latin America. Our brand has achieved recognition for our innovative technology, reflecting our commitment to excellence in orchestration and customer service.

We also host key industry events such as the Identity Day conference in São Paulo and 'The Great Identity Debate' webinar series, featuring many renowned speakers. Our presence at events such as Febrabantech, Identity Upon Thames and Marketplace Risk Global Summit further strengthened our presence in both Brazil and Europe, demonstrating our global expertise.

In your sector, what themes or technological advances do you think will dominate the market in 2024? What will be the future trends?
What we see is a global trend toward decentralizing identity authentication and adopting reusable credentials across multiple platforms. This trend, driven by almost daily data breaches, aims to set limits on the spread of personal information on the internet. Additionally, it benefits consumers by simplifying the authentication process, eliminating the need for repeated checks when accessing different platforms. This approach not only strengthens digital security, but also enhances the user experience in an increasingly connected landscape.

Another theme is the increase in fraud related to synthetic identity. Fraudsters can use altered documents containing some correct data about a person and some completely fictitious. Additionally, criminals can easily create synthetic digital identities using social engineering or public information readily available on the web.

What is your general opinion about the regulation of the sports betting and online gaming market in Brazil?
We believe that the Brazilian government is on the right path. Current legislation, recently approved in the Senate, follows best practices from other countries. As we all know, when new business opportunities arise, fraudsters inevitably appear. With the flood of new sports betting entities coming online in Brazil as soon as the regulations are approved, there will be a huge wave of fraud targeting these entities. Regulations should help create an anti-fraud mindset while protecting consumer data and prioritizing user experience.

What are your company's main objectives for 2024 in the Brazilian market? And on a global level?
We are committed to maintaining our pace of expansion and positioning Caf as a leader not only in the Brazilian market, but also globally. Additionally, we aim to make our 2024 Identity Day event even bigger and better with more attendees and speakers. We are also placing a high priority on digital security awareness, which is one of our main purposes.
