Public Defender from Mato Grosso advocates for Brazil's gambling legalization in his book

Launched this Tuesday (23), in Rio de Janeiro, the book 'Crime and Sports: General Sports Law, Criminal Types, and Related Conducts' features a paragraph written by the public defender in co-authorship with legal advisor Franscisco de Paula. The work, compiled by Leonardo Schmitt de Bem, a doctor in Criminal Law, and Bruno Gilaberte, a civil police delegate, focuses on the regulation of gambling in Brazil and the General Sports Law.

According to the public defender, the criminalization of gambling is not the best solution, as regulation would support a network of jobs and profitability for the state. "In this way, it is expected that the judgment of RE966177/RS will be against the criminalization of gambling in Brazil because, as it is provided in the law of criminal misdemeanors, more precisely in article 50 of the Law of Criminal Misdemeanors, it does not allow criminalization," stated Freitas.

The defender and the advisor also gave a lecture on the "Legal Framework for Gambling" at the State Police Academy of Sylvio Terra (Acadepol) in the capital of Rio de Janeiro. The presentation is part of the Seminar "Crime and Sports: In-depth analysis of the new general sports law."

"If there is a will in criminal policy, a norm should be produced in Brazil urgently to regulate the activity of gambling in Brazil so that economic activity can flow, generating tax gains for all entities of the Federation. The decision to criminalize will generate impacts of financial loss for all," argued the defender.

Francisco de Paula Nascimento e Silva, co-author of the book chapter, works as a legal advisor in the Defensoria in Cláudia (608 km from Cuiabá). "Strict regulation of games serves as a tool to mitigate associated risks, such as money laundering, fraud, and the exploitation of players' vulnerabilities. Moreover, the taxation of revenues generated by games provides an important source of funding for governments, which can direct these resources to areas such as health, education, and infrastructure," he emphasized.
