Finance and Taxation Committee summons CEOs of Brazil's main ‘Bets’ to public hearing

The Finance and Taxation Committee (CFT) approved request 87/2024 by Congressman Mário Negromonte Jr. to hold a public hearing to discuss the impact of online betting on the population's debt. The legislator requested the presence of CEOs of Brazil's leading ‘Bets’ – as operators are called in the country - and representatives of the Ministry of Finance.

Congressman Negromonte Jr. “requests that a public hearing be held at the Finance and Taxation Committee with authorized 'Bets' in Brazil,” since the Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) of the Ministry of Finance – SPA-MF has released the list of betting companies that can continue operating until the end of this year in Brazil.

In addition to representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the following sports betting platforms and their respective CEOs will be invited to the meeting:

In his justification, Negromonte Jr. cites the Central Bank's study on the betting movement, which revealed that Brazilians spend, on average, R$20 billion (US$ 3.5m)  per month on online 'Bets' (as the operators are called in Brazil).

According to the deputy, the study shows that more than 24 million individuals made at least one betting transaction via Pix in the first eight months of 2024, highlighting the urgency of mechanisms to prevent debt and addiction. Given this scenario, the BC is evaluating the impact of online bets on the population's debt and how this can influence the country's interest rate policy.

We understand that the debate on the topic is timely because it is a very important topic for the Brazilian financial and tax system, therefore we request the support of our noble peers for the approval of this Request,” he justifies.
