Brazilian government launches booklet to warn and protect the elderly on risks of iGaming

With the popularization of sports betting and online gaming, the federal government, through the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship (MDHC), has reformulated the “Support Booklet for the Elderly: combating financial and property violence”, offering guidelines on iGaming activities in Brazil. The 50-page document can be downloaded in this article.

The booklet highlights that the risks of online gambling do not only include financial issues, but also social ones. Vision is one of the main problems highlighted in the document, as the illusion of quick gains can lead many to use unnecessary resources, such as those intended for food and housing, to place bets.

The document also addresses the possibility of fraud, such as theft of personal data and increased vulnerability of bettors, resulting in other types of scams. Emotionally, gambling can trigger anxiety attacks and family depression, in addition to fostering social isolation and damaging relationships, the booklet points out.

In an interview with the “Bom Dia, Ministra” program on Canal Gov channel, the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo, addressed the risks of online gambling and gambling addiction. She highlighted that many people lose large sums of money, emphasizing that this problem is not related to education or social class.

Warning about the risks of online gambling

The Support Guide for the Elderly provides guidance on how to consider financial violence and scams that target vulnerable groups. The material warns about the financial dangers associated with gambling, such as fraud and manipulation of personal data.

In addition, the risks of online gambling include serious social consequences, such as the exchange of essential resources, which should be used for food and housing, for investments in gambling. The dependence generated by the promise of simple gains is also a significant warning.

Legislation

The legalization of sports betting in Brazil, imposed by Law No. 13,576/2018, allowed the online betting sector to operate without regulation for almost six years. Despite the expectation that the market would have been organized within four years, successive postponements complicated the process, resulting in risks of online betting, such as the increase in cases of abuse and addiction.

The recent sanction of Law 14,790/2023, which also included online gaming, is an effort by the government to finally regulate this activity, but many challenges still persist. With the advancement of digital technologies and the expansion of internet access, betting has become available at any time, reaching anyone with a cell phone or notebook.

This change has removed physical and temporal limitations, creating an environment that offers a constant and immediate gaming experience. Online betting platforms have evolved significantly, allowing not only traditional sports betting before games, but also real-time betting.

This innovation expands the opportunities available, covering thousands of sporting events and, consequently, the risks of online betting. In addition, technological advancement facilitates access to virtual casinos, where fast-paced and highly stimulating games attract a growing number of players.
