Brazil will be the first country to adopt facial recognition in online betting to prevent fraud and prevent underage betting. According to the IBJR, the solution will be similar to that adopted by banking institutions.
At certain points in the betting process, the authenticity of the user and also of the registered information will be verified. If there is any inconsistency in the information, the user will automatically be blocked.
Law 14.790/2023, which regulates online betting in Brazil, explicitly prohibits betting by minors under 18 years of age. Reinforced in regulatory ordinances by the Ministry of Finance, the restriction complies with the Statute of Children and Adolescents.
Artificial intelligence
IBJR will also adopt artificial intelligence tools on associated websites to block access attempts by children and adolescents. During user authentication, biometrics will be cross-referenced with other technologies used by 'Bets' - as the operators are called in Brazil -, mapping possible irregular behavior.
This process, according to IBJR, will use information stored in government and financial market systems. Facial recognition will prevent not only bets by minors but also operations by fraudsters who steal or hack cell phones to place bets on behalf of third parties.
