At an event held by HSBC in Washington, in the United States, Renato Gomes pointed out that the measure goes against the digital agenda that “is bringing Brazilians a cheap and beneficial means of payment.”
“I think that harming this agenda and creating complicated operational problems to prevent the use of Pix for some expenses and not for others is counterproductive in the end.”
Previously, the Brazilian Association of Credit Card and Services Companies (Abecs) expressed concern about the increased use of credit lines as a means of payment for bets and pointed out a greater number of transactions through Pix.
Gomes stated that this issue is not within the regulatory scope of the Central Bank and that the institution should not focus on gambling but rather on the consequences, such as the number of gamblers and how payment methods can impact financial stability.
In addition, the director spoke about cross-border payments and said he is talking, especially, with other Latin American countries about a possible integration of fast payment systems.
“Some countries have projects for fast payments and are trying to create projects similar to Pix so that integration can happen at a later stage,” he added.
