The rapporteur will be Soraya Thronicke

Dr. Hiran to preside over the CPI of 'Bets' that will be installed this Friday in the Senate

The Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) to investigate the performance of sports betting houses – locally called ‘Bets’ - in the Brazilian market will be installed today (25) in the Senate. According to Poder360, Dr. Hiran (PP-RR) will be the president of the committee, and the vice president will be Eduardo Gomes (PL-TO). The rapporteur, in turn, will be Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS).

The commission intends to investigate, above all, the period between the release of the so-called ‘Bets’, in 2018, under the government of Michel Temer, and of Jair Bolsonaro's, when there was no regulation of the activity. The destination of the payments will be investigated - whether the money remained in Brazil and was declared to the Federal Revenue, etc.

The CPI will also investigate how sponsorship contracts with football clubs and the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) are signed, as well as the origin of the money. However, it is not interested in the issue of match-fixing, which is the subject of another Commission, the Sports Betting CPI, chaired by Jorge Kajuru.

The parliamentary benches have defined 9 of the 11 senators who will be members of this committee — União Brasil and PSB have yet to choose the names that will represent them. The CPI will also have seven substitutes, but only four have been nominated as of this Thursday (24) afternoon.

Also this Friday, the senators who will occupy the positions of president, vice-president and rapporteur of the committee will be chosen. This election is made among the members of the CPI. The only women nominated for the committee are Senator Soraya Thronicke, who is a full member, and Eliziane Gama, an alternate for the bloc that brings together the PSB, PT and PSD parties.

Thronicke, in fact, is the author of the request that led to the creation of this CPI. The senator proposed the investigation with the justification that it is necessary to verify the influence that these bets and virtual games have on the budget of Brazilian families. Thirty senators signed the request for the creation of the committee.

This document also indicates that the relationship between sports betting companies and criminal practices, such as money laundering and currency evasion, will be investigated. The participation of celebrities in these betting programs is also in the CPI's sights.

The committee garners support from the left and the right in the Federal Senate. The expectation is that the work will last for 130 days — that is, it will begin this year, be interrupted by the parliamentary recess in December and will resume in February, when the senators return to the National Congress.
