Decision by legislator Otto Alencar

Senate's CPI of ‘Bets’ installation meeting is postponed until next week

Legislator Otto Alencar postponed the Senate session scheduled to install the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on the so-called ‘Bets’. Scheduled for today (25), the meeting will only take place next week as the Senate does not hold in-person sessions on Fridays. According to the rules, as he is the oldest senator, Alencar is the one who presides over the installation of CPIs in the House.

With almost all of its members already nominated by political parties, the CPI on 'Bets' was proposed to investigate “the growing influence of online virtual gambling games on the budgets of Brazilian families.”

The meeting to install the Commission was scheduled to take place this Friday (25), when the president and vice-president would be elected, in addition to the nomination of the rapporteur for the matter, which should be Soraya Thronicke, who proposed its creation.

In addition to the postponement of the session, the CPI of 'Bets' is already considering a change. This same Friday, the leadership of the Social Democratic Party decided to appoint Senator Otto Alencar, in place of his party and state colleague, Angelo Coronel.

The CPI will have 130 days to conclude its work, with an expense limit of R$110 thousand (US$ 19,000). According to the request, the CPI will also investigate the possible association of online betting companies “with criminal organizations involved in money laundering practices, as well as the use of digital influencers in the promotion and dissemination of these activities.

The intention, according to Soraya Thronicke, is to analyze the practice of currency evasion and money laundering, in addition to the influence of Brazilian personalities in the operation of the betting programs. The suspicion is that the software is programmed to cause losses to bettors and always guarantee an exaggerated profit margin for the companies.
