Febraban advocates temporary suspension of Pix for payment of sports bets and iGaming

The president of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), Isaac Sidney, met with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and with the Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Regis Dudena, this Wednesday (2). During the meeting, he advocated the temporary suspension of instant payment methods, such as Pix, for sports bets and online gaming.

We are considering proposing to the government that it create this task force for a reasonable period of time, so that it can deepen the socioeconomic impacts of the betting activity in Brazil. In the meantime, instant payment methods can be suspended to pay for online bets. It is time for the government to deepen this diagnosis, to deepen this examination," explained Isaac Sidney, upon leaving the meeting.

The president of Febraban did not say whether Haddad would comply with the entity's request or not. Despite this, he felt that the head of the department and Secretary Dudena would be "very determined" to face this problem.

"They are determined to have a 'CPF by CPF' control. They are determined to ensure that the entire prevention and money laundering policy is implemented. They are very concerned about debt, but it is not an issue that can be resolved overnight," stressed the president.

Plan B

If the measure is not implemented by the Finance, Sidney acknowledged that there may be other ways to prevent the misuse of payments on betting sites, such as imposing transaction limits, as is currently the case with Pix, between 8 pm and 6 am. Despite this, he reinforced that the most important thing is to guarantee the purchasing power of Brazilians.

"The focus is to find ways to prevent the deterioration of the level of household debt. Since studies today show that 90% of payments are made instantly, we are advocating that, temporarily, it be suspended or that limits be imposed so that this debt does not deteriorate,” he stated.
