Sportingbet closer to sign master sponsorship deal with Palmeiras for up to US$26m

Legal bureaucracy and the signing of the contract remain for the announcement of Palmeiras' new master sponsor. Negotitations of the deal with Sportingbet move forward for a four-year deal for a fixed R$100 million (US$17m), covering both the men's and women's teams. With bonuses - in the case of sporting goals such as titles - this amount could exceed the R$150 million (US$26m) mark in a season.

The agreement also provides for an increase in the fixed amount based on Brazil's inflation rates over the years. The Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), for example, accumulated up to the beginning of November 2024 is 3.88%, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on the 8th of this month.

The lack of adjustments to the amounts has been one of the main criticisms of the sponsorship contract between Crefisa and FAM - companies owned by president Leila Pereira - and Palmeiras.

The agreement did not provide for any adjustments or adjustments to payments since the beginning of 2019, when the partnership was renewed and then in a new contract, under the same terms and amounts, in July 2021.

One detail is that the negotiation with Sportingbet provides for the use of the brand on the master jersey of the professional men's and women's soccer teams.

This is a single contract, with amounts earmarked for the budget of both teams. There is no predetermined percentage division for each sector.

Currently, Palmeiras receives approximately R$99.5 million  (US$17m) in the sum of the fixed master sponsorship for the men's and women's teams, with exclusive use for the men's team in all areas of the Crefisa and FAM uniform.

The change will be for a similar amount, but for a single space (central on both shirts), without exclusivity and therefore with the possibility of negotiating other areas.

In the men's game, it is currently R$81 million (US$14m) per year, without adjustment, for the use of: central space, shoulder blades, sleeves, lower hem, upper and lower hem on the back, shorts and socks, in addition to space on the youth uniform. The contract could reach R$120 million (US$21m) thanks to goals for titles.

The women's game also features Crefisa and FAM on the shoulder blade, Palmeiras Pay on the sleeves and Esportes da Sorte as the master sponsor in the central part, for R$18.5 million (US$3.2m). The contract with the bookmaker ends at the end of this year with no intention of renewal.

Without exclusivity with the master sponsor, Palmeiras is negotiating other areas of the uniform in order to reach the minimum mark of R$150 million (US$ 26m) in the sum of the fixed amounts.

A novelty in this regard is that the club has negotiated the "combo" of space on the men's uniform and youth soccer, with the intention of increasing the fixed amounts of these other investors.

Because Sportingbet, being a betting house, cannot display shirts for the youth teams. The regulation of sports betting in Brazil prohibits the advertising of 'bets' (as the operators are called in Brazil) in categories below the professional level.
