André Fufuca: “Regulating betting provides legal certainty and preserves football’s credibility”

Sports Minister André Fufuca participated in the CBF Academy Summit, where he highlighted the importance of regulating sports betting in Brazil. For him, with a legalized and monitored system, it is possible to guarantee legal certainty and preserve football’s credibility. A panel addressed the topic, with the presence of the Secretary of Prizes and Bets, Regis Dudena, and the lawyer Pietro Cardia Lorenzoni (ANJL).

The event organized by the Brazilian Football Confederation(CBF) brought together executives from the entire football ecosystem in Brazil, including directors, coaches and users in the sports betting market. Sports Minister André Fufuca praised the regulation of sports betting in Brazil as a way of bringing transparency to the activity.

“Regulation will allow for stricter control, increasing transparency and protecting the rights of consumers and athletes. With a legalized and monitored system, we can guarantee legal certainty, improve tax collection and preserve the credibility of our football,” explained Fufuca.

These measures are essential to maintain public confidence in the sport and ensure that competitions continue to celebrate skill, effort and dedication,” stated the Minister of Sports.

In the panel on the future of sports betting in Brazil, the Secretary of Prizes and Bets of the Ministry of Finance, Regis Dudena, highlighted: “hard work that our team has been doing throughout the year to guarantee a regulated market with good practices regarding sports integrity."

Dudena gave an account of the entire process that led to regulation and that the Prizes and Betting Secretariat (SPA) is now notifying the companies that have submitted their applications to the government to submit the final documents and pay the concession fee for the start of regulated operations on January 1, 2025.

Pietro Cardia Lorenzoni, from the National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL), reinforced what the entity has been defending since its foundation. “Sports betting is a reality and the companies that have submitted their applications to the SPA work in accordance with the best international practices and seek, like sports entities, to prevent any practice that tarnishes football.

For him, sports integrity, as well as responsible gaming and advertising rules, are part of the policy adopted by ANJL members with the aim of making the activity transparent and a strong contributor to society through the generation of jobs and income.

Brunno Carmona Calado, regulatory and public affairs senior manager at Kaizen Gaming (Betano), reinforced the importance of sports integrity and good practices, “always adopted by Kaizen Gaming worldwide and also here in Brazil, with Betano.

With the regulation of sports betting in Brazil, we are taking great strides towards a transparent, fair environment with legal certainty for operators and to ensure that we contribute to the future of the sector in the country.
