CPI chairman wants to ban betting on corners and cards: “Lula accepted my idea right away”

The chairman of the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on Game Manipulation and Sports Betting, Senator Jorge Kajuru, stated that he wants to prevent bookmakers from accepting bets on cards, corners, throw-ins and even on goal scorers, due to the repeated suspected cases of match manipulation to benefit bettors. Kajuru said he passed on his suggestion to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who agreed with the idea.

“The main idea I have is that, starting January 1st, you can no longer bet on yellow cards, red cards, corners, hand kicks or anything similar. You will only be able to bet on the outcome of the game. Not even on who scored a goal, because an own goal could be manipulated, with bribes. That was my idea, which President Lula accepted right away,” Kajuru revealed on his radio show “BandNews Goiânia” this Thursday (11/7).

“Every day we learn about a player who received a yellow card, who was sent off, who scored an own goal, who committed a penalty, who received bribes, manipulated football results and made several people win a fortune through betting,” he complained.

The congressman also revealed that he will propose that betting using ‘Bolsa Família’ funds and credit cards be prohibited, allowing only the use of PIX as a payment method, in addition to adopting facial recognition as the only form of access so that minors under 18 are effectively prevented from betting. Kajuru stated that he is against the prohibition of the so-called ‘Bets’ in general.

“Some senators want to put an end to betting houses. The fact is that both in the media and, mainly, among the 40 biggest football teams in Brazil, 38 make their living from betting houses advertising. Today, they are the biggest sponsors in Brazil. How do you make a decision to 100% eliminate them?,” he asked.
