IBGE to analyze gambling addiction impact in Brazil in 2025 health survey

In a public hearing of the Senate's Human Rights (CDH) and Social Affairs (CAS) Committees this Wednesday (11), the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, stated she considers the impact of online gambling addiction on mental and family health to be serious. She confirmed that a Ministry’s department has been studying the effects of gambling, and that the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will address the topic in the 2025 health survey.

In response to the president of CAS, Senator Humberto Costa (PT-PE), and to Senators Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Chico Rodrigues (PSB-RR), Nísia also advocated carrying out a massive campaign in the country to warn about the risks of betting.

The senator endorsed the minister's words regarding the possible risk of gambling addiction and damage to the mental and financial health of gamblers.

Humberto Costa and the president of CDH, Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS), had independently invited Nísia to speak to the committees about the regulation of the law that establishes the National Policy for Comprehensive Care for People with Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias and other actions of the department. With both requests approved, they decided to hold the hearing together.

During the joint public hearing, which focused on public health issues and not on sports betting and online gaming, the minister ended up speaking about the sector and warning that the Department of Mental Health of the Ministry of Health has been studying the impacts of betting.

According to her, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) will address sports betting addiction in the 2025 health survey.
