Pacheco does not have the power under the rules to end a CPI, but he can make agreements capable of emptying the commission, instructing, for example, that members stop attending sessions.
Last week, after arguing with Senator Soraya Thronicke (Podemos-MS), rapporteur of the CPI, during a session of the committee, Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) sought out the President of Congress to inform him about suspicions that a well-known lobbyist from Brasília was extorting businessmen, allegedly in partnership with members of the committee.
Ciro Nogueira reported to the President of the Senate that he had received information that lobbyist Silvio de Assis had asked a businessman for R$40 million (US$ 6.6m) to prevent him from being summoned to testify at the CPI, claiming to have influence over certain congressmen.
Without directly accusing Soraya Thronicke, Nogueira stated that the rapporteur has a close relationship with the lobbyist. The parliamentarian admits to knowing Assis, but stressed that she is not friendly with him. “This is defamation, it is slander,” she stated.
