Damares Alves wants discussion only after end of ‘Bets’ CPI

Senator calls for suspension of vote on law that allows land-based gambling law in Brazil

Senator Damares Alves stated this Tuesday (3) at the Parliamentary Inquiry Commission (CPI) on betting that the National Congress made a mistake in approving law 14.790, that regulated sports betting and online games in Brazil (2023), and that it should not decide on gambling. The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, put the discussion of the topic in the Plenary for this Wednesday (4).

“We are seeing that what Congress approved did not work. And the legalization of casinos is on the agenda this week. Are we going to make the same mistake again? So, I think that while two CPIs are being held in this house, casinos and gambling cannot be discussed,” said Damares.

The senator asked that the votes be suspended until the investigations conducted by the legislative house are completed.

“So I think that these two CPIs should be suspended and concluded so that we do not make the same mistake again of criminals benefiting from legislation that we approved without any care,” she said.

The CPI was established in November and has until the end of April 2025 to investigate the “influence of virtual online gambling on the budget of Brazilian families” and also an alleged association with criminal organizations in money laundering practices.
