In 2023, Loterias CAIXA raised R$23.4 billion (US$ 4.71bn), an amount only 0.9% higher than last year. The total net prize awarded to bettors in the period was R$7.9 billion (US$ 1.6bn). Although sales increased by just 0.9%, it is a new record for the institution, but still a meager growth when considering the 25.6% growth in 2022 over 2021.
Loterias CAIXA constitute an important source of resources to promote social development in Brazil. In 2023, R$9.2 billion (US$ 1.85bn) was allocated, equivalent to 39.2% of the total collected, to the Federal Government's social programs in the areas of social security, sport, culture, public security, education and health. The value is 1.9% higher than that allocated in 2022, in addition to the return to society via Income Tax payments.
Last four years
The data below shows the evolution of Loterias CAIXA collections over the last four years. In 2020 and 2021, sales were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and in 2022 revenue had a record growth of 25.6% over the previous year.
In 2023, with the maintenance of the same lottery products, revenue grew by just 0.9% over the previous year, which demonstrates the need for Loterias CAIXA to review the lottery modalities available to the market. The possible entry into operation of the instant lottery in the first half of the year could have a positive impact on this year's results, but even so, the state bank will have to reevaluate its product offering, a long-standing requirement of Febralot, the federation that houses lottery concessionaires linked to Caixa.
Bank results
CAIXA's recurring net profit was R$2.9 billion (US$ 584m)in 4Q23, an increase of 40.5% compared to 3Q22. In the year, profit reached R$11.7 billion (US$ 2.35bn), 20% higher than that achieved in 2022.
The financial margin reached R$17.5 billion (US$ 3.52bn) in 4Q23, growth of 17.1% when compared to 4Q22. The growth in 12 months was mainly due to increases of 3.4% in credit revenues and 10.2% as a result of interbank liquidity applications.
