Senate Sports Committee will hold public hearing to discuss match-fixing

An interactive public hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday (20) at the Senate's Sports Commission (CEsp) to debate the manipulation of results in the 2023 Brazilian Championship. The request came from senators Eduardo Girão and Carlos Portinho. The CEOs of Good Game! and of SAF Botafogo, along with the presidents of the clubs Londrina and Tombense were invited.

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, authorized last Tuesday (12) the creation of a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate allegations of manipulation of results in football. The members of the CPI, requested by Senator Romário, still need to be defined, but even before that happens, some parliamentarians opposed to sports betting are already moving to promote noise against the activity.

This is the case of senators Eduardo Girão and Carlos Portinho, who presented requests to the House Sports Committee to hold a public hearing to address the manipulation of results at the end of February.

Both allege “hoaxes” involving corruption in sports betting in Brazil and asked that the CEO of Good Game, Thierry Hassanaly, be heard, who worked on the analysis of arbitration in last year’s Carioca Championship and declared that he was “99% convinced” that some games were rigged.

After the invitation to the interactive public hearing, only Hassanaly confirmed his presence, while the others have not yet guaranteed to participate in the meeting.

The following were invited to participate in the hearing:

  • Thierry Hassanaly, CEO of Good Game!

  • Thairo Arruda, CEO of SAF Botafogo

  • Getúlio Marques Castilho, president of Londrina Esporte Clube

  • Lane Gaviolle, president of Tombense Futebol Clube

The interactive public hearing will take place next Wednesday, March 20, starting at 10:30 am and broadcast live and open to the participation of interested parties through the e-cidadania portal at www.senado.leg.br/ecidadania or by calling the ombudsman on 0800 061 22 11.
