South Summit Brazil 2024

“The sports betting market cannot continue as it is,” experts say

The regulation of sports betting needs to advance effectively in Brazil. This is what the experts in this market who participated in a panel on the second day of South Summit Brazil 2024, in the city of Porto Alegre, defended. The panel was made up of André Gelfi (IBJR), Marcello Corrêa (Axis Veritas), Rafael Reuter (Play Big) and Jorge Roberto Cunha Ferreira (4all).

The law that provides for the regulation came into force at the end of last year. However, some points are not yet in force and depend on definition by the Finance Ministry. Among them is the publication of the standard to regulate the license fee to operate in Brazil.

"No one seriously wants things to remain in the gray area," defended Axis Veritas consultant, Marcelo Corrêa. "It is important to have an accurate parameter of the market. Let's separate the responsible from the irresponsible," he added.

According to the CEO of Play Big, Rafael Reuter, Brazil surpassed England at the beginning of 2024 as the country with the highest number of bets. “This slow regulation only brings harm,” he said.

The director of Betsson Group in Brazil, André Gelfi, highlights that the activity is about entertainment and has to be seen in this way. "This needs to be discussed. We are responsible for people and awareness is fundamental," he understood. "It cannot bring more harm than good to society." Reuter added: "it's not a way of life."

Market numbers

According to Marcelo Corrêa, the numbers estimate that bets grew 250% from 2019 to 2024. "It's a reality. There's no way back." This advance is what motivates the federal government to seek taxation.

According to him, the segment generated a turnover of R$ 50 billion (US$ 10m) last year. Higher number than Caixa lotteries.
